The second phase of the Sun Museum’s flagship project, the 2nd Sai Yuen Lane Open Painting Exhibition, will be held from August 29 to October 18, 2026. As a permanent biennial exhibition established after the Sun Museum relocated to 1 Sai Yuen Lane, Sai Ying Pun, the Sai Yuen Lane Open Painting Exhibition is dedicated to providing an open platform for local Hong Kong painting creators.

This year’s Sai Yuen Lane Open Painting Exhibition attracted over 700 public applications from creators across Hong Kong, generating an unprecedentedly enthusiastic response. The jury selected 118 original new works by 93 artists, to be exhibited in two phases. The first phase, featuring the themes of “Urban Landscapes” and “Figures” filled with the warmth of everyday life, moved countless visitors; the second phase shifts the exhibition theme to “Landscape,” “Flora and Fauna,” and “Abstraction.” A wide variety of media are on display, including ink wash, oil paint, acrylic, mineral pigment, pastel, and mixed media. Artists extend their perspectives to mountain and sea vistas, natural creatures, and even delve into memories, dreams, and the deconstruction of pure color.

Renowned artist Man Fung-yi employs a unique abstract visual language to explore the profound layers of the mind and space; Shen Danni, Zhang Yingyi, and Luo Xiaoman utilize the richly textured medium of mineral pigments, integrating the mottled textures of natural mineral colors into their compositions, endowing their works with a calm yet delicate natural tension. Ho Lus and Li Jia Ping depict landscapes and natural scenes with ink wash techniques that blend tradition and contemporaneity; Lam Yee-kei captures the layering of light, shadow, and emotion through richly colored oil paintings; artist Hosokawa Tezukakumo presents groundbreaking mixed-media works that expand the boundaries of painting; Kwong Ko-wah uses soft, full-bodied pastels to render fine textures; and Lau Hong-lam presents a unique structural aesthetic through the replication and etching of printmaking. From landscapes to pure abstraction, each work reflects the most authentic emotional state of a Hong Kong resident over the past two years, representing the diverse spectrum of contemporary Hong Kong painting.

Dr. Sun Yen-wah, founder of the Sun Museum, said: “The enthusiastic response to the first Open Painting Exhibition and the immense passion demonstrated by the artists gave us tremendous courage and strength to push forward with this biennial. We hope to institutionalize the Open Painting Exhibition, upholding the spirit of the European classical salon—‘Art for art’s sake’—setting aside barriers and competition to build a permanent stage for Hong Kong creators, allowing creation to return to its purest love and inspiration, where every vibrant soul can be seen.”
